What are Clones?

Clones are essentially plants grown from clippings of an original plant. This means that the plants are genetically identical. Some types of plants are known for being easy to clone, such as pothos and tradescantia plants; however, crops such as cannabis and even some vegetables can easily be cloned. You might want to consider cloning a plant that is doing particularly well or one that you simply enjoy and wish to have more of. Regardless of why you wish to clone a plant, the process of doing so is relatively simple and, in many cases, much easier than growing from seed.

How to Grow Clones

1. Obtain a high-quality cutting – you can’t simply take a cutting from any part of a plant and be assured that it will develop roots. Take care in sourcing a cutting from an axillary bud and one that has not been damaged. An axillary bud can typically be spotted easily near the top of your plant in a spot where you notice new leaf development.
   
   
2. Prove clones with a rooting hormone – your clone does not yet have roots, so they will need to develop them. Adding a rooting hormone to growing media will boost your success in cloning your plant and make it possible to have a successful clone.
   
   
3. Maintain a humid environment – when growing your clone hydroponically, you’ll want to be sure that you have created a humid environment that will allow your clone to absorb moisture. As it will not yet have roots, a too dry environment will simply dry out your cutting and not allow for root growth to take place.
   
   
4. Keep your grow tent cool – just like a too dry environment will be a problem for growing clones, so will a too hot space. Though warmth can be important for plant growth, too much heat will dry out a plant and make growing impossible. Use a fan for your grow tent to help control the temperature of your space. This is important for both growing clones and typical hydroponic growing.
   
   
5. Avoid providing too much light – light is important and having just the right amount is crucial when growing clones. Be sure to provide adequate light and adjust lighting as needed.
